One of the most beautiful places in the country, Dehradun is known for its sprawling mountains and landscapes. The capital is Uttarakhand has the beautiful Doon Valley that lies in the foothills of Himalaya and Siwalik Range.

With its natural beauty, Dehradun offers enough to make a traveler stop. While it is popular for the institutions that British left behind, like Forest Research Institute Museum, the Wildlife Institute of India and Indian Military Academy, most people who visit Dehradun and nearby areas are more interested in invigorating themselves.

The main Dehradun in itself is a hectic city, with a lot of hustle-bustle. But if you want luxury or budget resort in Dehradun, you should opt for places in the vicinity. Things to Do in Dehradun and Other Areas

Paltan Bazaar :

Running south from the South Tower, Paltan Bazaar is a funky marketplace where you can enjoy the culture of Dehradun. It is relatively traffic-free, but mostly crowded. Shop cheap clothing, souvenirs and trekking gears from this place.

Survey of India Museum :

This is the place where you can some of the best designed instruments for mapping India in the 19th century. Here, you can find brass transits and scopes along with a variety of other items. However, the museum isn’t open to public and you will have to contact the Surveyor General’s office for permission to visit.

Mindrolling Monastery :

Buddhist community thrives in Dehradun. If you are interested in exploring the religion and way of life, then this monastery is the place to be. The Great Stupa here is one of the tallest in the world. Everything in this monastery is designed to be grand. So, there’s a 35-high gold statue of Buddha, which is dedicated to Dalai Lama.

Forest Research institute Museum :

Larger than the Buckingham Palace in London, this museum is best known for its beautiful building. It is a grand remnant of the British Raj. This is the place where most Indian forest officers are trained. The place has stunning Mughal towers with Roman columns and elegant cloisters and formed arches. It also features several beautiful paintings.

Ram Rai Darbar:

Enjoy free communal lunches and explore Sikhism at this place. The unique mausoleum is for Ram Rai, the son of seventh Sikh guru, Har Rai. The place has four smaller tombs for Rai’s four wives.

Several other places to visit nearby:

For instance, there’s Malsi Deer Park, which is a beautifully developed tourist spot. Then, there’s Rajaji National Park that has a magnificent eco-system. You can request the resort to provide you further information about major places of interest in and around the region.

Bird Watching in Dehradun

Bird Watching in Dehradun or Birding is an activity that a lot of people enjoy in Dehradun. The place is perfect for recreational observation of birds.

The area starting River Ganges to the east and River Yamuna to the west is perfect for watching birds in their natural habitats. Shaheen Bagh has places like Asan Barrage located not too far, where you can enjoy birding experiences. Rajaji National Park is another place that’s accessible through the resort where you can go and enjoy some fun time observing birds.

In Dehradun valley, the best time to explore birds from autumn to winter when a number of migratory birds from Palearctic and Upper Himalayan region gather here. Spring to Post-Monsoon is the period to watch local residents. Currently, over 400 species of birds can be seen in this valley, while over 600 birds can be observed in the surrounding hills.

Karvapani :

Located 20 km from Dehradun, Karvapani forest is a dense Sal Forest with beautiful fresh water springs. The lush green beauty of this place makes it perfect for migratory birds throughout the year. The forest is rich in wildlife.

Rajaji National Park and Asan Barrage :

The un-spoilt National Park and forest is a tiger reserve and features over 200 leopards. This place is also known for its wild elephants. Asan Barrage is a region that’s located 28 km off Dehradun and is flanked by Yamuna River. The place is a haven for bird-watchers.

Lachhiwala :

Just 22 km from Dehradun is Lachhiwali, a picnic spot that’s popular amongst sightseers and bird watchers in the country.

Thano :

The modern forest of Thano is popular among birdwatchers. The place has stunning iodiversity and enchanting landscapes. The relatively unexplored birding area is perfect for treks and hikes as well.

We have three type of walk/trekking, like Easy, Moderate or Difficult.

  • Walk to Bhitali Village Duration 1 Hrs. (Easy) : This walk will take you deep in the village to enjoy the daily routins of the villagers & if possible you can do milking the cow goat & buffallow .
  • Walk to Shigally to Kimari Plant Duration 1.30 Hrs. (Modrate) : This will lead you to the upstream walking upto a hanging bridge its more than 60 years old. You will appreciate walking through the village of Bhitali in your way and expeience the village life.
  • Walk to Shantala Devi Temple 3 Hrs. (Moderate) : Starting from Shaheen Bagh walk through the SAL jungle village to be passed by Sigally ,Galjwari and Santoorgarh.
  • Walk to SAL jungle from Shaheen Bagh 2Hrs. (Modrate) This will be a combination of all the true things that are walking though jungle,morning across the village & enjoying the upstream walk in the Tons river.
  • Walk through Tons River Adventure 2 Hrs. (Difficult) Starting from Shaheen Bagh walk in the riverinclude adventure also.The walk will make you encounter the natural landscapes and caves having natural bathing ponds. In monsoon seession you can fishing also.
Tips: You need floater or sports shoes, back pack.

If you are interested in bird-watching, but are new to it

  • Have Binoculars to enjoy birds : It will help you get a big, bright, crisp pictures. Don’t be tempted to buy cheap inoculars, instead have something that’s good quality so that your experience is supreme.

  • Field Guide : Having a guide when you start bird watching is a great thing. Once you start seeing the birds, you would want to know more about them and this is where a guide can help you. You can buy a guide book or you can get a guide in the area to support you through the journey.

  • Bird Feeders :Want to have good look at the birds? Then we recommend that you have bird feeders of different types. This will attract a majority of birds in the natural habitat.

  • Camera : Of course, it is necessary to take a camera. Now is the time when you can take photos anytime and anywhere. So, why not use this time to get the best pictures of beautiful, gorgeous birds!

  • Records : If you are serious about birding, make sure that you prepare records. Compiling information about the birds you have seen is an excellent thing to do.

  • Connections : While bird-watching can be a relaxing solo event, a lot of people prefer going out with someone. So, find people, make groups to enjoy this activity with other likeminded people.
